Respectful homage was paid to Mahatma Gandhi at the Gandhi Ashram Trust in Noakhali in Bangladesh on the occasion of his martyrdom day on Saturday, January 30.

The Director and CEO of the Gandhi Ashram Trust Raha Nab Kumar led the people at the Gandhi Ashram Trust to lay a wreath on the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the morning.

An all religion prayer meeting was held at the Ashram which was followed by lighting of lamp.

A discussion was also held on the occasion on the theme of ‘Mahatma Gandhi’s Non-violence and its relevance in the current Global Context’. Several academics, journalists and eminent persons of the area took part in the discussion.

The discussion was followed by a play ‘ Mahatma’ performed by the cultural group of the Gandhi Ashram Trust.

Mahatma Gandhi had visited Noakhali in the then East Pakistan, now Bangladesh, for four months in 1946-47 on a ‘peace-mission’ when it was gripped by communal riots preceding partition of India. The Trust has been working to foster Gandhian principles of peace, non-violence and social harmony.
